Have you worked with an amazing translator or interpreter recently? We hope you’ll celebrate International Translation Day with us on September 30, 2021. The holiday reminds us to pay tribute to the language professionals that bring people together.
Read on to learn more about International Translation Day.
The International Federation of Translators (FIT) established International Translation Day in 1991 “to show solidarity of the global translation community and to promote the profession of translation.” September 30 was chosen because it celebrates the feast of St. Jerome, the translator of the Bible, who is considered the patron saint of translators.
The United Nations’ General Assembly adopted resolution 71/288 on May 24, 2017, officially declaring September 30th as ITD. The Assembly wanted to recognize “the role of professional translation in connecting nations and fostering peace, understanding, and development.”
This year’s celebration theme is “United in Translation.” Creating connections between people who read, write, or speak different languages brings people together.
